A Sanctuary of Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not
So much seek to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
-St. Francis of Assisi

Steadfast God, perhaps one of the greatest mysteries
is why you continue to entrust the work of your
kingdom into our clumsy hands.
But we are forever grateful that you do
Not want to change the world without us.
May we become the church you dream of.
Amen.

Our lives are but a breath,
But our breaths are drawn from your divine Spirit.
You have created us as walking paradoxes.
We are specks of dust and divine-mage bearers.
We are constantly restless until we rest in you.
Grant us a deeper fullness of being and spirit by abiding with you.
Amen.

I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou will, rank me with whom thou will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.  Let me be employed for thee
Or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Thou art mine and I am thine.  So be it.  And the covenant which I
Have made on earth, let it be ratified in Heaven.
Amen.

O God, our rock and our salvation,
Undergird us with your strength,
lest we fail by living within our own strength.
Assist us with your Holy Spirit
that we may abide in your love
and trust in your grace.
Overshadow us with your transforming love,
Overpower us with your goodness.
Forgive us and sustain us as we languish in the residue of our sin,
And bring us, ultimately, into your eternal embrace.
Amen.

_____

To you, O God, be all praise and glory.
From you we have received grace upon grace.
In the midst of temptations and distractions,
Focus our attention on faith, that we may lean into life
and be guided by your inspiration and joy.
Amen.

“My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact
that I think that I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by
               the right road though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem
to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me
to face my perils alone.”
 -Thomas Merton

Lord, you have always given bread for the coming day;
and though I am poor, today I believe.

Lord, you have always given strength for the coming day;
and though I am weak, today I believe.

Lord, you have always given peace for the coming day;
and though of anxious heart, today I believe.

Lord, you have always kept me safe in trials;
and now, tried as I am, today I believe.

Lord, you have always marked the road for the coming day;
and though it may be hidden, today I believe.

Lord, you have always lightened this darkness of mine;
and though the night is here, today I believe.

Lord, you have always spoken when time was ripe;
and though you be silent now, today I believe.

Lord, take me where You want me to go;
Let me meet who You want me to meet;

Keep me out of your way.

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow men
throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger.
Give them through our hands this day their daily bread,
and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.

Let my heart be the vessel of God's Love.
Let my thoughts be the fruit of God's Love.

Let my actions be the fulfillment of God's Love.

May God bless you with a restless discomfort
about easy answers, half-truths and superficial relationships,
so that you may seek truth boldly and love deep within your heart.

May God bless you with holy anger at injustice, oppression,
and exploitation of people, so that you may tirelessly work for
justice, freedom, and peace among all people.
 May God bless you with the gift of tears
to shed with those who suffer
from pain, rejection, starvation, or the loss
of all that they cherish, so that you may
  reach out your hand to comfort them and
transform their pain into joy.

May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that
               you really can make a difference in this world,
so that you are able, with God's grace,
 to do what others claim cannot be done.

And the blessing of God the Supreme Majesty and our Creator,
Jesus Christ the Incarnate Word who is our brother and Savior,
and the Holy Spirit, our Advocate and Guide, be with you
and remain with you, this day and forevermore.

AMEN.

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
That my life may only be a radiance of Yours.

Shine through me, and be so in me
That every soul I come in contact with
May feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me, but only Jesus!

Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine,
So to shine as to be a light to others;
The light, O Jesus will be all from You; none of it will be mine;
It will be you, shining on others through me.

Let me thus praise You the way You love best,
by shining on those around me.
Let me preach you without preaching,
not by words but by my example,
By the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
The evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You. Amen.
-John Henry Cardinal Newman

O God, we pray for all those in our world
who are suffering from injustice:
For those who are discriminated against
because of their race, color or religion;
For those imprisoned
for working for the relief of oppression;
For those who are hounded
for speaking the inconvenient truth;
For those tempted to violence
as a cry against overwhelming hardship;
For those deprived of reasonable health and education;
For those suffering from hunger and famine;
For those too weak to help themselves
and who have no one else to help them;
For the unemployed who cry out
for work but do not find it.
We pray for anyone of our acquaintance
who is personally affected by injustice.
Forgive us, Lord, if we unwittingly share in the conditions
or in a system that perpetuates injustice.
Show us how we can serve your children
and make your love practical by washing their feet.
-Mother Teresa

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
-Sir Francis Drake -1577

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous,
teach me to serve you as I should,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labour and ask not for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your most holy will.
-Jesuit - St. Ignatius Loyola - 16th century
